Udon Thani is best known to many foreigners as a city of expats and Vientiane visa runs, but the province holds some of the oldest human history in Southeast Asia. At Ban Chiang, villagers found painted pots thousands of years old, and every winter Nong Han lake turns pink with millions of lotus flowers.
Read on for the Bronze Age story of Ban Chiang, the districts around the lake and the sandstone hills of Phu Phrabat, the best season for the Red Lotus Sea, and the cloth and crafts made in its villages. Producers will also find how to sell their work to buyers across Thailand and abroad.

Why Udon Thani is more than a gateway to Laos
The city was founded in 1893 as a military post and grew quickly in the 1960s, when the United States built the Udorn air base during the Vietnam War. Today it is the 8th most populous province in Thailand, with about 1.55 million people, and a busy regional hub near the Lao border.
Its real treasures are older. Ban Chiang, about 50 km east of the city, is a major Bronze Age site known for red-painted pottery, and Phu Phrabat Historical Park, with its prehistoric rock art and sandstone shrines, joined the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2024.
