Phuket Province Guide: History, Towns and Local Products
Phuket sells itself on beaches, but the island was rich long before tourism. For centuries its tin mines drew traders and workers from China, Malaysia and Europe, and the mansions they built still line the streets of the old town.
This guide covers what makes Phuket different from Thailand's other islands: the key dates of its history, its three districts, the festivals worth planning around and the local products its makers sell. For local producers, there is also a word on finding customers outside Phuket.

Why Phuket is not just a beach
Phuket is Thailand's largest island and its second-smallest province, only 547 km². Tin made it wealthy from the 16th to the 20th century, and Hokkien Chinese miners and merchants gave it a Peranakan culture, with its own dishes, dress and architecture.
That mix earned Phuket a place in UNESCO's network of Creative Cities of Gastronomy in 2015. Its population of about 432,000 swells to more than a million in the high season.
Two heroines
In 1785, sisters later titled Thao Thep Kasattri and Thao Si Sunthon led the defence against a Burmese siege.
A Peranakan old town
Sino-Portuguese shophouses on Thalang Road recall the tin-mining boom.
A city of gastronomy
UNESCO named Phuket a Creative City of Gastronomy in 2015.
The island everyone knows
About 10 million visitors came in 2017, drawn by Patong, Kata and Karon.
Phuket through the centuries
Phuket's history is written in tin: sieges, uprisings, migrants and fortunes, long before the first resort opened.
- 1500s–1900sTin mining makes the island rich and draws traders from China, Malaysia and Europe.
- 1785Burmese forces besiege Thalang. The island's defence, led by two sisters, forces them to retreat on 13 March.
- 1876Chinese tin-mine labourers rise up on the island.
- 1933Phuket becomes a province in its current form.
- 2004The Indian Ocean tsunami of 26 December kills about 250 people on the island.
- 2015UNESCO names Phuket a Creative City of Gastronomy.
- 2021The 'Phuket Sandbox' makes the island the first part of Thailand to reopen to vaccinated tourists.
The three districts, and what each one is for
Phuket has only three districts, but they are very different places.
| District | What you find there |
|---|---|
| Mueang Phuket | Phuket Town and its old quarter, Chalong, Rawai, Kata and Karon beaches, and Promthep Cape. |
| Kathu | Patong, the island's busiest beach and nightlife strip, and the old tin town of Kathu. |
| Thalang | The north of the island: the airport, the Heroines Monument, quieter beaches and forest reserves. |
Festivals, seasons and the best time to visit
Phuket's calendar mixes Thai, Chinese and sailing traditions. Here are the dates worth marking.
What Phuket makes: local products and OTOP
OTOP ties each product to the sub-district that makes it, and in Phuket the list follows the island's two cultures. Peranakan kitchens make sweets and dishes such as mee Hokkien noodles, moo hong braised pork and o-tao, an oyster and taro omelette.
From the land and sea come Phuket pineapples, cashew nuts and cultured pearls, sold in the island's markets and souvenir shops.
The carousel at the top of this guide shows live products from Phuket producers as they go online, and makers keep all of every sale.
Short on time? Thalang Road, then sunset at Promthep Cape. Into history? The Heroines Monument and the old tin town of Kathu. Visiting in October? The Vegetarian Festival. Buying local? Pineapples, cashews and a Peranakan cake shop.
