Why Lampang is the north's quiet craft capital
Lampang sits in the broad valley of the Wang river, ringed by mountains. It is a province of about 704,000 people, and its capital has kept an unhurried character, with teak houses from the logging era and carriages that have become its symbol.
Underground lies its other wealth: ball clay for ceramics, limestone, and lignite at Mae Mo, where the largest coal-fired power plant in Southeast Asia stands. The clay feeds the ceramics industry that turns out the famous rooster bowls.
