Chiang Rai Province Guide: History, Towns and Local Products
Chiang Rai is where Thailand ends and three countries meet. Standing at the Golden Triangle, you can see Laos and Myanmar across the Mekong, and the hills behind you are covered in tea, coffee and pineapple farms.
This guide covers what makes Chiang Rai different from its bigger neighbour Chiang Mai: the key dates of its history, its main districts, the festivals worth planning around and the local products its makers sell. Producers will also find how to sell their work to buyers across Thailand and abroad.

Why Chiang Rai is not just a day trip from Chiang Mai
Chiang Rai is older than Chiang Mai: King Mangrai founded it in 1262, before moving his capital south. It is Thailand's northernmost province, sharing borders with Myanmar and Laos, and its history is one of frontier towns, river trade and hill peoples.
Today it is best known for art and agriculture. Contemporary artists built the White Temple and the Black House here, while the highlands around Doi Tung and Doi Mae Salong produce some of Thailand's best-known coffee and tea.
The Golden Triangle
At Sop Ruak in Chiang Saen district, the Ruak meets the Mekong where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar touch.
Art you can walk into
Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple, is the work of artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, started in 1997.
Tea and coffee hills
Doi Tung, Doi Chaang and Doi Mae Salong are names coffee and tea buyers look for.
A frontier of peoples
Akha, Lahu, Yao and Lisu villages live alongside the Tai Yuan in the hills.

Shopping local in Chiang Rai
OTOP labels a product by the tambon, or sub-district, that makes it, and in Chiang Rai the list follows the hills. Highland arabica from Doi Chaang and Doi Tung, oolong tea from Doi Mae Salong, and pineapples from the lowlands around Nang Lae are the best-known.
The hill peoples add textiles and silver: Akha headdresses and embroidery, Yao needlework and Lahu weaving, many of them sold through village cooperatives and royal projects.
Real products from Chiang Rai makers appear in the carousel at the top of this page as soon as they are listed. Sellers pay no commission on SnapSellGo, only a yearly shop fee.
