Why Suphan Buri is a land of stories
In 1593, at Nong Sarai in what is now Don Chedi district, King Naresuan of Ayutthaya is said to have defeated the Burmese crown prince in single combat on elephant back. The battle is one of the most celebrated in Thai history, and the Don Chedi memorial honours it with a fair every year.
Suphan Buri is also the setting of Khun Chang Khun Phaen, one of the great works of Thai literature. Wat Pa Lelai, with its huge seated Buddha, appears in the poem. In the 20th century the province gave luk thung, Thai country music, some of its best-known voices, including Pumpuang Duangjan. The old riverside market of Sam Chuk, with its wooden shophouses, received a UNESCO Asia-Pacific heritage award in 2009.
