Nan Province Guide: History, Towns and Local Products

S SnapSellGo Editorial September 2026 14 min read

Nan is the north as it was before the crowds: a quiet riverside capital, temple murals that people travel across the country to see, and valleys where Tai Lue women still weave on wooden looms under their houses.

Below you will find the kingdom's long history, the districts worth the drive, the festival that fills its river with racing boats and the crafts that earned Nan a place among UNESCO's Creative Cities in 2025. For local producers, there is also a word on finding customers outside Nan.

Why Nan still feels like its own kingdom

For centuries Nan was a small kingdom of its own, squeezed between Lanna, Lan Xang and Sukhothai, and it only became a regular Thai province in the 20th century. That long independence shows in its temples, whose style mixes Lanna and Lao influences, and in a slower pace of life than anywhere else in the north.

It is also one of the greenest provinces in Thailand, with seven national parks. The largest, Doi Phu Kha, covers 1,704 km² of mountains along the border, and the road to it passes Bo Kluea, where villagers have boiled salt from mountain springs for generations.

The whispering murals

Wat Phumin's murals include the famous 'whisper of love', one of Thailand's best-known temple paintings.

Salt from the mountains

In Bo Kluea, salt is boiled from brine wells high in the hills, far from any sea.

A city of crafts

Nan joined UNESCO's Creative Cities Network in 2025 for its crafts and folk art.

Seven national parks

Doi Phu Kha alone covers 1,704 km² of forest along the Lao border.

Key dates in Nan's history

Nan's story is one of a small mountain kingdom that survived between bigger neighbours, fell under Burmese control for long periods and joined Siam late.

  • 1300sThe Nan kingdom takes shape in the upper Nan valley, with its own ruling dynasty.
  • 1443King Inthakanthao of Nan plots to capture neighbouring Phayao, a sign of the kingdom's ambitions.
  • 1560s–1780sLong periods of Burmese control, as across much of the north.
  • 1788Nan comes under Siamese influence while keeping its own princes.
  • 1932Nan is fully integrated into the Thai provincial system.
  • 2025UNESCO names Nan a Creative City for crafts and folk art.

The districts worth knowing

Nan has 15 districts and about 471,000 residents (2024), one of the lowest population densities in Thailand. Four of them shape most trips.

Festivals and seasons worth planning around

Nan's calendar is set by the river and the cool season. Here is when the province comes alive.

Local specialities and the OTOP programme

Thailand's OTOP programme, One Tambon One Product, pins each product to its home sub-district, and Nan's list is led by its weavers. Tai Lue cloth, with its 'flowing water' patterns, comes from villages such as those of Tha Wang Pha, and cotton weaving is part of daily life across the valleys.

Bo Kluea's mountain salt is sold in small bags as a local speciality, and the highlands grow arabica coffee sold by small producers.

Buyers can check the carousel above for items listed by Nan makers, while producers can open a shop with zero commission on sales.
