Nakhon Phanom Province Guide: History, Towns and Local Products
Nakhon Phanom looks across the Mekong at the limestone mountains of Laos, and much of its life happens on the riverbank. Its best-known site, Wat Phra That Phanom, is one of the most revered temples in Isan and in Laos alike.
This guide looks at the chedi and its collapse and rebuilding, visits the province's districts along the river, and lists the weaving and foods of its many communities. For local producers, there is also a word on finding customers outside Nakhon Phanom.

Why Nakhon Phanom is a pilgrimage province
Wat Phra That Phanom, in That Phanom district, is believed to hold a relic of the Buddha's breastbone. Pilgrims from Thailand and Laos come to its annual fair, and its white and gold chedi is a model for many others in the region. After days of heavy rain, the old chedi collapsed on 11 August 1975; a new one was built and completed in 1979.
The province is also a crossroads of peoples, including Phu Tai, Lao, Vietnamese and other communities. Ho Chi Minh lived for a while in the village of Ban Na Chok in the late 1920s, where his house can be visited. In 2011 the Third Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge opened, linking Nakhon Phanom with Thakhek.
