Why Sakon Nakhon is known for monks and indigo
Sakon Nakhon was settled early by the Khmer, who left sanctuaries such as Phra That Narai Cheng Weng. Phra That Choeng Chum, in town, was built over an older Khmer structure and became one of the most revered temples of the upper Isan region.
In the 20th century the province became the heart of the Thai forest monk tradition. Ajahn Mun Bhuridatta, its most famous teacher, spent his last years here and died at Wat Pa Sutthawat in 1949, where a museum honours him. The province is also known for hand-dyed indigo cotton, and for the wax castles carried through town at the end of Buddhist Lent.
