Kalasin Province Guide: History, Towns and Local Products
Few travellers stop in Kalasin, and that is exactly why it is worth a look. The province holds Thailand's largest dinosaur site, one of the biggest moated towns of the Khorat Plateau and the looms of the Phu Thai weavers who make Praewa silk.
This guide covers what makes Kalasin different from the rest of Isan: the key dates of its history, its main districts, the festivals worth planning around and the local products its makers sell. And if you make something in Kalasin, the last part shows how to reach buyers far beyond the province.

Why Kalasin is Isan's best-kept secret
Kalasin sits in the heart of the northeast, a hilly province where people speak Thai, Isan and Phu Thai. Its roots are ancient: Mueang Fa Daet Song Yang, a Dvaravati-era town, is the largest moated site on the Khorat Plateau.
Its most unexpected treasure is much older. At Phu Kum Khao, in Sahatsakhan district, paleontologists found Thailand's largest dinosaur site, with sauropods around 120 million years old, now displayed at the Sirindhorn Museum.

Built between 1963 and 1968, the dam stores 1,430 million m³ of water.
Pong lang music
The wooden pong lang xylophone is the sound of Kalasin's folk music.

Made in Kalasin: OTOP and local specialities
The OTOP scheme gives every product a home sub-district, and Kalasin's best-known product is Praewa silk. The Phu Thai weavers of districts such as Kham Muang and Khao Wong make it by hand, with dense patterns that take weeks to complete.
Around Lam Pao reservoir, fishing and farming families produce dried and fermented fish, and the province grows sticky rice and cassava across its farmland.
