Sukhothai Province Guide: History, Towns and Local Products
Sukhothai means 'dawn of happiness', and Thais see it as the place where their nation began. The kingdom founded here in 1238 gave the country its alphabet, its classic style of Buddha image and, according to tradition, the festival of Loy Krathong.
This guide covers what makes Sukhothai different from Thailand's other old capitals: the key dates of its history, its main districts, the festivals worth planning around and the local products its makers sell. Producers will also find how to sell their work to buyers across Thailand and abroad.

Why Sukhothai is where Thai history begins
Before Ayutthaya and Bangkok, there was Sukhothai. Its most famous ruler, King Ramkhamhaeng, is credited with creating the Thai alphabet, derived from Khmer script, and the kingdom's walking Buddha images are still seen as a high point of Thai art.
Two of its old cities, Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai, are UNESCO World Heritage sites, and the province still lives largely from farming: agriculture makes up about half of its economy, led by rice.

The historical parks of Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai preserve the first Thai kingdom's capitals.

Sukhothai through the centuries

Made in Sukhothai: OTOP and local specialities
Under OTOP, every product is linked to the sub-district where it is made, and Sukhothai's list goes back seven centuries. Sangkhalok ceramics, once fired at Si Satchanalai and shipped across Asia, are still made in the old style, and Si Satchanalai is also known for its fine gold jewellery.
The Thai Phuan weavers of Hat Siao make hand-woven textiles with intricate tin chok hems, and Sukhothai noodles, a sweet-sour pork noodle soup, are known across the country. Mae Sin tangerines and Sukhothai sapodillas are registered geographical indications.
Buyers can check the carousel above for items listed by Sukhothai makers, while producers can open a shop with zero commission on sales.
