Phetchaburi Province Guide: History, Towns and Local Products

S SnapSellGo Editorial October 2026 13 min read

Phetchaburi is only a couple of hours south of Bangkok, and for more than a century Thai kings have used it as a retreat. King Mongkut built a palace on a hill above the town, King Chulalongkorn a European-style palace by the river, and King Vajiravudh a teak palace on the beach at Cha-am.

This guide explains that royal history, tours the eight districts from the coast to the Kaeng Krachan forest, and looks at the palm sugar desserts that made the town a UNESCO City of Gastronomy. For local producers, there is also a word on finding customers outside Phetchaburi.

Why Phetchaburi became a royal retreat

In 1859 King Mongkut began building Phra Nakhon Khiri on a hill overlooking the town, a palace where he could also observe the stars. Locals call the hill Khao Wang, the palace hill. Chulalongkorn later built Phra Ram Ratchaniwet, known as Ban Puen Palace, designed by a German architect, and in 1923 Vajiravudh built Maruekhathaiyawan, a teak palace on stilts near the sea.

The province is just as proud of its kitchens. Palm sugar from local sugar palms is the base of its sweets, such as khanom mo kaeng, and in 2021 UNESCO named Phetchaburi a Creative City of Gastronomy. The same year, the Kaeng Krachan Forest Complex, which includes Thailand's largest national park, was added to the World Heritage list.

Phetchaburi through the centuries

Phetchaburi's recent history is written by royal builders, with a UNESCO chapter added in 2021.

  • 1859King Mongkut begins Phra Nakhon Khiri, the palace on Khao Wang.
  • 1910Work starts on Phra Ram Ratchaniwet, the Ban Puen Palace.

Local specialities and the OTOP programme

Thailand's OTOP programme, One Tambon One Product, pins each product to its home sub-district, and in Phetchaburi the sugar palm is at the centre of it all. Palm sugar, tapped from local trees, sweetens khanom mo kaeng and the other desserts sold in the town's shops.

The coast of Ban Laem produces sea salt and dried seafood, and the markets of Mueang Phetchaburi sell sweets, palm sugar and fruit to visitors on their way south.

The carousel at the top of this guide shows live products from Phetchaburi producers as they go online, and makers keep all of every sale.

If you only remember one thing

Short on time? Khao Wang, then a dessert shop in town. Into history? Ban Puen Palace and Maruekhathaiyawan. Love the outdoors? A dawn trip into Kaeng Krachan. Buying local? Palm sugar and a box of khanom mo kaeng.
