Phayao Province Guide: History, Towns and Local Products
Phayao is built on the shore of Kwan Phayao, a broad lake ringed by mountains, and its evenings are spent on the lakeside promenade watching the sun set behind the hills. It is one of the calmest provincial towns in the north.
This guide looks back at the kingdom of Phayao and its famous king, visits the temples on and around the lake, tours its nine districts and lists the Tai Lue cloth and lake foods it is known for. Producers will also find how to sell their work to buyers across Thailand and abroad.

Why Phayao was once a kingdom
In the 13th century Phayao was an independent Tai kingdom. Its ruler, King Ngam Mueang, is remembered for his alliance with King Mangrai of Lanna and King Ramkhamhaeng of Sukhothai, the pact honoured by the Three Kings Monument in Chiang Mai. Phayao was later absorbed into Lanna, and for most of the 20th century it was part of Chiang Rai, before becoming a province of its own in 1977.
Its temples tell this long story. Wat Si Khom Kham, on the lakeshore, houses Phra Chao Ton Luang, a huge seated Buddha venerated across the north. Out on the water, the ruined Wat Tilok Aram stands half-submerged, reached by boat.
