From the rough stone to the finished jewel
Dakanda Gems is a gem cutting workshop in Ban Rong Khun, Chiang Rai, run by Mr. Kritthum Piathip.
Here, stones are bought rough and worked by hand: jade is sliced, and gemstones of every kind are cut and polished, from precious stones like ruby and sapphire to jade, quartz, amethyst, tourmaline and garnet.
The workshop also makes jewelry settings of all types to order, so a stone can leave the shop as a finished ring or pendant.
And because the craft should be passed on, Dakanda Gems teaches gem cutting and how to identify and tell gemstones apart.

Every stone is different. I cut each one by hand, to show the best of its color.
Behind the work
The Search
Stones are searched for in riverbeds, washed and sieved by hand, then sorted by type: jade, quartz, amethyst, tourmaline, ruby, sapphire and more.
Raw Stone Selection
Each rough stone is examined under the loupe: its color, clarity and inclusions decide what it can become.
Cutting & Polishing
The stone is shaped and its facets are cut one by one on the wheel, then polished to reveal their brilliance.
The Setting
The finished gem is set by hand in a ring, pendant or earrings, made to order around the stone.
